Meet The Dream Team

Michael kelly
Director
@Michaelkellycolourist
Considered one of Australia’s most talented colourists, Michael Kelly has spent close to two decades creating luxe hair for his loyal clientele while inspiring and elevating the industry through his globally renowned education platform. Growing up as a coastal kid in a small surf town, 16-year-old Michael hit up the local mall’s flashiest salon for his first job in the industry before moving to Sydney and stepping up and into what was Australia’s most exclusive salon: VALONZ Haircutters. Here he worked and trained under the country’s biggest names in hair and editorial styling, developing his skill set and a standout service ethic. Then came a national role with Oscar Oscar salons leading their education team before wanderlust and an opportunity to relocate to London in 2015 presented the chance to grow and connect with like-minded industry leaders across Europe, America and the Middle East.

Returning to Australia a few years later with an impressive, global social media following, Michael took on his biggest role to date, heading up both the colour and education teams for Australia's most influential salon group at a time of massive expansion. Juggling a demanding client roster with regular travel, he was instrumental in building and scaling what quickly became an internationally revered education offering.

After the privilege of working for Australia’s best and brightest salon groups, it was time for Michael to take the leap towards creating his own. While continuing to grow his Michael Kelly Education platform globally, he began to build his vision for the home of transformative hair. Salon HER opened in January, 2023 on Victoria Street in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. Very much the reflection of his passion for his craft and genuine dedication to his clients, Michael has created a salon experience like no other.

Epic Travel Fail:
Getting my leg stuck in the drain of a Paris hostel shower; having to call for help, very naked and very embarrassed.

Great hair hack:
Always make sure your ends and face frame are bright and popping and keep those roots soft and blended.

Sweet or Savoury ?
Both, life’s too short!

Tell us a joke:
A hairdresser goes on a lunch break…

Biggest hero?
My dad!
He’s taught me to always work hard and to always keep going.

Why Salon HER ?
Michael interviewed me for a job six years ago and I told him that if he opened a salon I would love to work there. I got the job, we worked together for years — and didn’t want to kill each other! — and that’s pretty damn special.

Hair signature:
Hair extensions. I love giving women their dream hair, even if it isn’t their own. As a fine-hair gal myself I know how limiting it can feel so being able to offer endless options of length, density and colour just gets me excited.
